Huntington Beach, CA - The City of Huntington Beach announced today that it has received millions of dollars in settlements related to the 2021 oil spill and the subsequent cancellation of the Pacific Air Show. The city settled its dispute with Amplify Energy, the company responsible for the oil spill, for $5.2 million. This settlement is separate from a previous settlement with Pacific Air Show, which was for approximately $2 million over six years.
The city attorney, Michael Gates, expressed gratitude to Amplify Energy for working diligently to address the city's losses related to the oil spill. Councilman Tony Strickland praised Gates' leadership in negotiating the resolution. Strickland also criticized the previous city council for their handling of the Air Show cancellation, alleging that they violated the 2021 Air Show permit by canceling the event without holding a public hearing with the applicant.
The $5.2 million settlement with Amplify Energy will be used for essential city services such as public safety and infrastructure. The previous settlement with Pacific Air Show, worth $4.9 million, was already public knowledge. Initial payments of $1.9 million have already been made, with subsequent payments of $500,000 scheduled each year.
While the city has settled its legal disputes, the future of the Pacific Air Show remains uncertain. There is no long-term agreement in place for the air show this year. Tony Strickland expressed hope for a long-term agreement, citing the significant economic benefits the air show brings to the city.
The Pacific Air Show generates over $100 million for the local economy and provides significant revenue for hotels and restaurants. Any long-term contract with the air show must be approved by the city council.
